Do you know what world earth day is? World Earth Day is a day of observation of the earth which is celebrated internationally every year on April 22. Earth Day was originally intended to increase human appreciation and awareness of the planet inhabited by humans today, namely the earth. It was first proclaimed by United States Senator, Gaylord Nelson, in 1970. He is a lecturer in environmental disciplines. This date actually coincides with spring time in the Northern Hemisphere in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
However, there is debate as to when exactly Earth Day will be. Most celebrate Earth Day on April 22, referring to the event when activists celebrated the first Earth Day on the same date in the late 1960s. Still others celebrate Earth Day on the spring equinox. , so Earth Day will fall at different times between the northern and southern hemispheres.
The United Nations (UN) or the United Nations commemorates World Earth Day on March 20, which is a tradition of peace activist John McConnell in 1969. This date is the day when the sun is directly above the equator or known as the March Equinox. commemorated by 175 countries and globally coordinated by the Earth Day Network.
Earth Day was originally initiated by the community and was commemorated by NGOs and organizations in the field of environmental conservation, while World Environment Day was commemorated based on the UN Conference on the Environment which took place on 5 June 1972 in Stockholm. The conference date was later set as World Environment Day. Indonesia participated in the conference and was represented by Prof. Emil Salim who serves as Head of Bappenas. World Environment Day is considered more official and is often commemorated by the public and governments in a number of countries in the world. The basic purpose of the two celebrations is to stimulate public awareness of the environment which is getting worse day by day.
With this commemoration of world earth day, let's increase our awareness of our beloved earth with real action. Don't make this world earth day just a gathering place to worry about the earth but without real action to protect, care for and save the earth. Earth preservation is not an individual responsibility but the preservation of the earth is the responsibility of all parties living on earth without exception. Therefore, awareness of the importance of earth preservation need to be instilled in each individual as early as possible and continuously.
